How to wipe Mac OS X file slack

For wiping mac hard drive used and free space disk utility is used. But, disk utility is to capable enough to wipe file slack. File slack refers to the area left out after files data end and till file system block is finished. As file system is divided into blocks of finite sizes. In hard drive, file slack occupies almost gigabytes of information and this area is not cleaned with free space. This, means wipe mac done with disk utility similar to windows utility eraser (for windows OS) is incomplete.

Owing to this, wipe mac software is required for clean wipe mac; it thoroughly overwrites data including free and slack space. It removes junk files, install, console and other unused application logs. Browser history, cookies, temporary files are all removed such that recovering them is not at all possible. Can’t import and Scanpst fails to recognize PST file

MS Outlook’s PST file is often moved and copied to external storage media like DVD, CD etc. so that it can be restored later. During this process it is recommended to keep the MS Outlook application close otherwise the PST file might gets corrupted. Scanpst.exe tool is used to repair the damaged PST file but the PST file size should be below 2GB. But there are situations encountered where this tool has failed to repair the corrupted PST file and you need to import the PST file in order to access it.

Let’s consider a realistic scenario where MS Outlook copies the Outlook PST file to the CD and later reinstalled a new hard drive. After that user have replaced the newly created PST file with the one which is copied to the CD. But when user tried to access the PST through MS Outlook the application doesn’t recognize the PST file. When the saved PST is imported it gives an error message that says that the file is not valid personal folder. This behavior from the PST file clearly indicates the PST corruption.

To rectify this issue and repair PST file when Scanpst tool is used it came with an error message which says –

“The Inbox Repair Tool does not recognize the file file_path.pst. No information can be recovered ”.

Missing iPhoto Library Due to Broken Faces

Very often users complain about the Face corruption issues particularly while working on large iPhoto libraries on Mac. Faces fail to categorize images which is causing huge issues for the users. To understand the situation let’s consider a scenario where when user clicks on the name of the toolbar the photos comes with the full size. User may find two options at the bottom, first is Add Missing Faces using which user can name many faces. But when users go to the cork board it says no faces found followed by an intro screen which is not the same as mentioned in the tutorial.

In this situation the Faces need to be scanned in the iPhoto Library. But doing this will loose the entire work done with the faces. The steps that user need to go through are as follows –

  • Quit iPhoto
  • Go to your Pictures Folder or where the library is actually kept
  • Right Click on it and from the resulting menu section select the “Show Package Contents”. A Finder window will open and the Library will be exposed
  • Find these files: face_blob.db and face.db
  • Move these to trash
  • Now make no changes and restart iPhoto
  • Then allow it to complete the face scan again.

In most of the cases after performing the above mentioned steps face corruption issue gets resolved, but if it doesn’t then the only way to resolve the issue is by using iPhoto Library Recovery software which will effectively resolve the issue in seconds.

Can’t move the PST items after upgrading to Microsoft Outlook 2007!
